Scientific professional societies contribute to scientific progess. Professional societies connect communities of scientists, facilitate scientists’ career development, and provide opportunities for scientists to interact and develop new projects that advance their fields.

SMTPB is a new professional society whose ability to launch programs depends on membership fees and donations. SMTPB scientists work on basic and applied science, developing mathematical models for demography, ecology, epidemiology, evolution, and genetics. Mathematical models in population biology address a vast range of applications: for assessing the demographic impact of aging populations, predicting the dynamics of infectious diseases, managing fisheries and other natural resources, developing statistics for DNA fingerprinting, and addressing resistance to antibiotics, to name a few.
