  Modern Coexistence Theory (MCT) provides a powerful framework for understanding when species coexist, using species' invasion growth rates. The theory has a rich history that integrates mathematics, ecological theory, and challenges in conservation science.

  This workshop will overview the history that led to MCT before exploring (a) the mathematical underpinnings of MCT, including permanence theory; (b) the theoretical framework for partitioning invasion growth rates to understand the drivers underlying ecological outcomes; (c) data-driven tests of coexistence theory; and (d) applications of MCT in global change and restoration settings. While rooted in competitive interactions, MCT principles may provide insights into the evolution and maintenance of diverse interaction types and community outcomes.
