We are pleased to invite you to the joint Society for Modeling and Theory in Population Biology and Applied Mathematical Ecology Group online event bringing together applied ecologists and conservation scientists with researchers working in theoretical ecology, evolutionary biology, and mathematical modelling, creating space for exchange across both disciplinary and geographic boundaries, particularly between Australia and North America.
The talks will explore how eco-evolutionary and decision-making models can inform pressing ecological challenges. Topics include the effectiveness and trade-offs of expanding protected areas for biodiversity conservation, the role of adaptive human behaviour in shaping management outcomes, and the development of decision-support models for emerging climate-ready interventions such as assisted evolution and managed relocation. Across these themes, speakers will address how modelling frameworks can be used to evaluate uncertainty, anticipate unintended consequences, and support adaptive management in complex ecological systems.
By combining applied and theoretical perspectives, the event aims to highlight common modelling challenges, foster cross-community dialogue, and strengthen connections between researchers working on ecology, evolution, and conservation in different institutional and geographic contexts.
Our speakers are:
The event will take place online on March 18, 2–5 pm (Pacific Standard time) / March 19, 8–11 am (Australian Eastern Standard time).
We warmly invite you to join us for this event and take part in the discussion.
